The fourth generation (4G), iPod touch is the most iPhone-like even Apple. Retina has the same screen, same processor A4, and two cameras - one for chat FaceTime and a 0.7 MP camera for video at 720p, and low-resolution still images (the iPhone has a 5 megapixel camera). The big differences: a metal back, no phone, no 3G wireless connectivity, Assisted GPS no, and no digital compass.
iPhone OS 4.1 is available for the iPod touch for free. It is not compatible with the original iPod touch or iPhone original, but it supports all the following models. Not all features are compatible with all hardware - like the iPod touch 2G and 3G iPhone does not support multitasking.

The original iPod touch can be upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1 for $ 9.95 through the iTunes Store. The original iPod touch will agree with most of the functionality of the 2G model.

Very pleasant looking, lightweight silicone skin. I believe the nano would survive just fine in case of a drop. The only better thing would be leather, but that would add a lot of bulk and spoil the sleek design of the ipod.

I was pleased to discover that the screen protector is a perfect fit, and was easy to apply. This would probably protect the screen from scratches from sand in case of a drop, but wouldn't help much in an encounter with a rock, in which case the screen would probably shatter. But it's meant for scratch situations.

The silicone over the touch wheel is thinner, enabling easy operation. Also, the silicone is not sticky / rubbery, but rather has the feel of baby powder-- smooth and easy so slide your thumb over.

The armband slides through two slots on the back of the sleeve. Only thing I would change is the color of the arm band (black) since the nano itself is silver and the skin is a translucent white.

Otherwise, a great deal! Very pleased.

This hard case fits my "3rd gen" ipod touch 8G. Allows me to charge and plug in my earphones with the case still on which is a plus. It's thin case with a nice semi New Yorkish skyline. I wished it fit a bit better on the bottom (doesn't 100% click to close on the bottom but quite close) which is why I rate 4 and not 5 stars.

iPhone’s behavior under these scenarios was predictable, given the behavior of other, unreleased Works With iPhone accessories we’ve tested. When a call comes in, regardless of whether iPhone is in speakerphone, handset, or Bluetooth mode, the music quickly fades out to a pause, and the iPhone’s ringer turns on, playing through the T612’s speakers at the same volume as the music. If the ringer’s off, the iPhone vibrates quietly in the dock, without coming loose. Unless you’re using a separate Bluetooth accessory, accepting the call basically requires you to remove the iPhone from the dock: on speakerphone mode, callers described us as sounding muffled because of the dock-covered microphone, and on handset mode, you need to put the phone up to your ear to hear it. In neither case does the iPhone perform in-call audio through the T612’s speakers. But with a separate Bluetooth accessory, you don’t need to pull the iPhone from the dock—it works just as expected to send your voice and your caller’s voice wirelessly to a separate accessory. External GPS for iPod and iPhone

Ever wish your iPod touch or older generation iPhone had GPS capability? Now it can by using a Bluetooth GPS module along with the roqyGPS app.

In April we saw a pretty creative way to add GPS to an iPod by using a homebrew accessory. The new app is a better solution because it utilizes the larger screen and more functional UI of the iPod touch. We’re glad to see this come along because we’d rather not upgrade to the iPhone 3G just to get GPS support. roqyGPS has a fairly long supported hardware list, which should make it relatively inexpensive to pick up a GPS module either on sale or second-hand.

The hardware: Packaged in a slim plastic shell, the Juicepack Air from Mophie offers protection and claims to double the battery life of the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but we all know how battery life claims work. Is this the one you should believe? Well, actually, I'm not telling you yet. Read on!

The details: When you open the box, you can tell one thing right away: the Juicepack Air is meticulously designed to fit the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The black model (the one I had) matches the plastic nicely and doesn't look out of place when clipped on. It comes in two pieces; the top half goes over the headphones, sleep switch, volume controls and silent switch. You can see those in the photo above. Below, you get a good feel for the bottom of the Juicepack Air.

The design remains clean on the bottom. A MicroUSB (not a mini; figures, I have 3,000 mini cables) and a power switch to turn off the battery. Doing so will turn the Juicepack Air into a standard case that does one heck of a job protecting the scratchable bits on the iPhone. A very nice feature is that you don't have to remove the iPhone from the case to charge it. You can simply plug the other end of the included MicroUSB connector into your computer and voila: charging and synching while inside the case. On the back is a button you can press and four LED lights will tell you how much of a charge is left in the battery pack.
so now you know what it looks like. Does it work?

The verdict: I'm not going to lie. I didn't perform exhaustive battery tests on the Juicepack Air. Instead, for about a month, I used it nearly daily. I used it to supplement my battery, and I used it to recharge a dead iPhone. In all cases it performed better than I expected.

Typically with my 3GS, the battery will be half dead by 3:30 or 4:00 (I take it off the charger at about 7:00 in the morning). With the Juicepack on, the battery easily made it a whole day with only approximately 20 percent battery loss total. To me, that's worth it. Mathematically it isn't a doubling of battery capacity, but it's a gigantic improvement.

If your iPhone dies, the Juicepack can recharge it from the dead, but doing so basically means you can't use the Juicepack until you get some juice back into it. That means finding a USB port somewhere because it doesn't come with an AC adapter, something you can easily buy online for a few bucks if you want to have it along with you.

Overall, the Juicepack is great. It's a tad expensive, but if you measure its price against the frustration you feel when your battery dies, it's a small price to pay. I'm glad I got a chance to try one out and would highly recommend it if your battery just isn't lasting the day.

I'm insanely pleased with my OtterBox waterproof iPod Touch case.
As Charlie will attest, I've often said I'd be totally happy if I could get on the internet while in the bath. I'd stay there all day, topping it up with hot water now and then, checking email, reading ebooks and slowly turning into a prune.
And I thought it was a fairly un-attainable goal until I realised that someone must make a waterproof case for the iPod Touch, a quick search turned up the OtterBox, as seen in this video.Obviously the plan isn't to plunge the iPod into the bath but just to survive all the steam and being held just above all the foam.
So now I can sit and read O'Reilly books on Safari Online with out them a) being utterly heavy b) the pages going all soggy. If you’ve ever read this site before you know that I’m a frequent swimmer. I also like to listen to music a lot.
This used to be a big problem. Bringing a Walkman in the pool: very bad idea.

Fortunately for people like me, the technology has evolved. I now frequently use MP3 Goggles. However, I understand a lot of people are pretty attached to their iPods. They don’t want to get a new player and have to load all their music on it.
That’s why I wrote this article: How To Waterproof Your iPod In Four Easy Steps. If you’re a swimmer or engage in any form of activity with a lot of moisture like sailing, this article is for you.

1. Figure out what kind of iPod you have

This is an important step. The more technically savvy of us realize that there are now a lot of different iPod models that are different sizes. You can tell exactly what kind of iPod you have by checking what kind of wheel or touch display it has and its storage capacity. Then check this chart on Apple’s store to figure out which one is yours.

2. Pick out a waterproof iPod case

The first step is important because you have to make sure the case you pick out will hold your iPod. There are a number of makers of waterproof iPod cases. One of the most popular is Otterbox. They make cases for different models like the Nano and Classic. The prices vary but they start at about $40 each. Their case is pictured to the right here.

3. Pick out some waterproof headphones

Having a waterproofed iPod with non-waterproof headphones will get you nowhere. You still won’t be able to listen to music in the pool, kayaking or synchronized swimming.
Again, there are a number of waterproof headphones out there. The prices vary a lot too. If you want great sound quality, you’ll have to pay more but there are a number of models with solid quality for under $50. Check out my article on waterproof headphones for more info.

4. Get an iPod strap

If you’re seriously considering waterproofing your iPod, you’re probably doing it to use in conjunction with some sort of physical activity. Maybe swimming, maybe sailing, maybe just shoveling the snow. Either way, you’re going to want to keep your hands free and won’t want to have to hold your iPod. I recommend an armband. That keeps the iPod and headphone cord relatively out of the way but accessible. There are a lot of makers of these too including Otterbox (their strap is pictured to the right).

Apple surprised many people at their recent iPod launch event by focusing on the iPod nano rather than their flagship touchscreen PMP, the iPod touch. Still, they saved a little magic for the third-generation model, including a lower starting price and some games-focused speed boosts higher up in the range. Does the iPod touch 3G stay ahead of the pack, or did Apple miss a trick by not tweaking further? Check out our review after the cut.

Physically, the iPod touch 3G is unchanged over its second-gen counterpart. That means you get the same, slender chrome-finish casing, side-mounted volume keys, a lock/power button up top and a docking port on the bottom. What many were hoping for – a camera, like that of the iPod nano or iPhone 3GS – failed to materialize. In fact, the real changes are all inside, so that’s what we’ll be focusing our review on.

While the entry-level 8GB iPod touch remains unchanged from its second-gen format, allowing Apple to hit the all-important $199 price point, the 32GB and 64GB third-gen models get a significant boost in speed. That’s because Apple have used the same processor from the iPhone 3GS in the two new models, and while they’ve not publicly confirmed the exact hardware specifications, as you can see in our demo video the new PMP and its smartphone sibling keep pace with each other exactly.

That adds up to faster app loading times – particularly games, which Apple are positioning the iPod touch to focus on – and speedier navigation, with the PMP whipping through menus and handling large email inboxes with far greater ease. It also adds OpenGL 2.0 support, for better graphics, which we’ll increasingly see featuring in upcoming games.

Unfortunately, some of the iPhone 3GS’ other skills, such as true GPS, haven’t travelled over to the new iPod touch 3G, so you’re still left with WiFi triangulation. That means it’s not really the platform for the new spate of navigation software we’re seeing in the App Store from TomTom and others. You do, though, get A2DP stereo Bluetooth across the board, as well as Voice Control (with an in-line microphone) on the 32GB and 64GB models. However, while that may make sense on a model like the iPod shuffle, which lacks a display, having verbal track and playlist announcements is of less use when you’ve the iPod touch’s excellent 3.5-inch 320 x 480 capacitive touchscreen. Apple claim up to 30 hours audio or 6 hours video playback, and in our testing we found the iPod touch was certainly capable of a full day’s heavy use.

With the new third-gen iPod touch, Apple have opened the same gap that’s between the iPhone 3G 8GB and the newer iPhone 3GS in their touchscreen PMP line. For Apple it makes sense: the older products allow them to hit the price sweet-spots required to squash the competition, while the flagship models then step in to satisfy those who demand the bleeding-edge or high-capacity storage. At $199, the entry-level 8GB iPod touch certainly ticks most of the boxes you’d ask of a PMP, though we can’t help but look covetously at its 32GB and 64GB siblings and their doubly-fast processors and superior graphics capabilities. If you’re only in it for the music, video and internet access, and your media library is compact, the 8GB model will do; anyone with more ambitious expectations should find the extra for the $299 32GB iPod touch 3G. As is its habit, the company has posted in-depth slideshows of the newest Apple products in all their disassembled glory. You can see the nano’s new video camera, microphone, and speaker, all the while marveling at the incredible tolerances of engineering that make it possible to fit all that tech in such a small package. The camera itself, for example, is just 3mm thick—as iFixit points out, that’s half the size of the unit used in the iPhone 3G, which is likely why they don’t use the same hardware.

Then there’s the third-generation iPod touch. While it doesn’t look very different from its predecessor on the outside, you can’t judge an iPod from its exterior. As we know, there’s a new, faster processor on the inside, and a wireless chip that supports 802.11n (though the software at this point does not). There’s also an FM receiver and transmitter in the Bluetooth chip, though no antenna to use them. Conspiracy theorists can run wild on the fact that there appears to be room for a camera similar to the nano’s, and the internals even look similar to allegedly leaked photos of the new internals from a few months back which actually had cameras in them.

What’s Missing

Here’s the part for non-iPhone owners to pay attention to. If you’re considering getting an iPod touch instead of an iPhone, if you’re already happy with your BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Phone, Android, Symbian, or feature phone, or if you just hate phones but want in on the iPhone OS action, here’s what you need to know.

You get most of the experience. Where you miss out, however, is exactly what we mentioned before. You’re not online all the time. You don’t get precise GPS location data. You can’t take pictures or share video.

In short, while you don’t have the high monthly carrier bills to contend with, you end up with a device that’s somewhat less than convergent, and convergence is the future.

Conclusion

Strictly as an iPod, the iPod touch G3 is an evolution that will appeal to those who really want a faster device or the expanded memory 64GB offers. If those are your primary criteria, it’s an easy choice.

If you already have an original iPod touch G1, and certainly if you have last year’s iPod touch G2, you might want to hold out for the next revision which — hopefully! — will get that camera and mic.

If you’re new to the iPod ecosystem, this is the flag ship device for a reason. It’s super snappy, a media beast, and can access the App Store. However, you may still want to consider an iPhone first.

Now, if you have kids and don’t want them to have a phone, but do want to share all your iTunes media and apps with them for fun and vacation, then the latest iPod touch is a dream device. If you really can’t cut that other (smart)phone cord but want a taste of the iPhone experience, then this is definitely the way to go.

Just make really, truly sure you wouldn’t prefer an iPhone first. And if you get that taste and decide your really want that always-on connection and video goodness, hey, you can always upgrade to an iPhone later.

For existing iPhone owners, it’s a tough sell. If you already have an iPhone 2G and don’t want a new one, the iPod touch 3G can give you some new hardware, but it’s one more thing to carry around. Same for iPhone 3G owners.

For iPhone 3GS owners, unless you’re an uber-geek who needs a device to develop for beta firmware, run jailbroken or otherwise experiment with, or just to keep around the house as an ultra-compact web tablet and iTunes remote, you’re already covered.

iPod touch G3 gets several of the features that were introduced since the last touch, and have already been added to the newer devices like iPod shuffle and iPhone 3GS.

Talk to the Mic… er… Headset

Voice Control makes its debut in the 32GB and 64GB iPod touch G3. Since it doesn’t have a mic like the iPhone 3GS, there’s no hold-down-home to activate. Instead, you hold down the center button on the Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic, and speak into the earphone’s mic.

Since the iPod touch’s speaker isn’t much to talk about anyway, most users will have the earphones on most of the time anyway, though we still hope to see a built-in mic at some point.
(And, of course, there’s none of the iPhone 3GS phone control).

A for Accessibility
While Apple gets — deservedly — a lot of flack for some of their behavior, one thing at which they have excelled with as of late is accessibility. Yes, the iPod touch G3 gets the same amazing accessibility options as the iPhone 3GS.

The original iPod touch was marketed as a great iPod, with Wi-Fi seemingly added so you could download content from iTunes, and Safari so you could log into hotspots to do the same. Later, and for a controversial price, Apple added Mail and the Weather and Stocks widgets, conceding almost full “breakthrough internet device” to the iPod touch.

Then came iPhone OS 2.0, and a few months after it, the iPod touch G2, and suddenly it was all about the gaming. This year, at the “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it” annual music event, Apple kept the focus on gaming, but came full circle to stress the iPod aspect again, and — amazingly — the pocket computer aspect as well.

Music to Our Ears

So how is the iPod touch G3 as an iPod? Pretty much the same as the iPod touch G2, but that’s saying a lot. While audiophiles may still scoff at digital music (and true audiophiles at anything other than live music), to our ears the iPod touch line sounds great, even if that’s just like always.

Video looks just the same as on the iPhone 3GS, crisp and clear, even if Apple is still fiddling with the color cast and white balance. 480×320 at 120dpi is aging but isn’t showing it yet. Held close, it’s big and beautiful and plays video without a hiccup.

Apps for That

Apple is stressing the iPod touch is a gateway to the 75,000 strong App Store, and a lower cost gateway, especially when considered against an iPhone and it’s 1.5 – 3 years contract (depending on where you live) that can add up to thousands of dollars.

With its new processors the iPod touch G3 runs almost all apps easily as well as the iPhone 3GS and that means blisteringly fast. Almost all apps, of course, except for those requiring cellular telephony, GPS and Compass, or Camera functionality.

On Wi-Fi, with CoreLocation’s Wi-Fi triangulation, you can fudge that a little, but you can’t really fudge the loss of ubiquitous, always-on network connectivity, precise location data, and the ability to take, trim, and share still pictures and video. More on that later, however.

Game On

Along with the iPod touch G3’s beefier internals is support for Open GL ES 2.0, which means that — again like the iPhone 3GS — games have the potential to reach “the next level”. Potential, however, because most developers will no doubt target that 40 something million install-base of iPod touch G1 and G2, and iPhone 2G and 3G that don’t support the new processors or graphics standards. A few will, however, either with universal binaries or specific versions that target the new hardware.

While Nintendo DS and Sony PSP are clearly on Apple’s radar with the iPod touch, the lack of physical buttons will always keep some hard core gamers from fully buying into the multi-touch controlled, accelerometer driven, more casual-style focus of the iPod touch. There are some third party accessories that aim to blend cases with thumb-sticks and triggers, but it remains to be seen if that’s a better solution for the marketplace as a whole.

Either way, Apple is now referring to games and apps, as though games were equal to everything else combined in the app store. In terms of what dominates the top seller charts, and likely drives income levels, that’s no doubt true.

While the iPod touch shares Apple’s multitouch-centric mobile OS X with the iPhone, it obviously doesn’t include the phone part (or any of the telephony, which means no SMS/MMS or tethering either — nothing that uses a cellular network), and — as mentioned — it doesn’t have a camera. That means it doesn’t include the Phone, Messages, Compass, and Camera apps, and that means the home screen is slightly different. Under the iPhone 3.1 OS (or 3.1.1 as it quickly prompts you to update) that means the default set includes, in order: Mail (not in dock), Calendar, Photos, Contacts (on the first page), YouTube, Stocks, Maps (without GPS), Weather, Voice Memos, Notes, Clock, Calculator, Settings, iTunes, Music (in dock instead of Phone), Videos (in dock in place of Mail), Safari, and App Store (in dock).

Yes, iPod isn’t there, and Music and Videos are broken out, though both Music and Videos provide access to video podcasts. (Music supports landscape and portrait mode videos, Videos only landscape mode). A tad confusing, even if it does help fill out the home screen.

Hardware Review : iPod touch G3

For our iPhone 3GS hardware review, we joked it was the same as last year, end of story. Thanks to Apple, we’re left with pretty much the same opening line here: the iPod touch G3 is the same as last year.
Except, of course, like the iPhone 3GS, that outward assessment doesn’t tell the inner story at all, and while Apple marketing didn’t see fit to call this the iPod touch S, that inner story is again all about speed.

Note: You’ll see a lot of “like the iPhone 3GS here” because, frankly, it is and we reviewed that member of Apple’s mobile platform family first. That also means we’ll focus on what differences there are, and we’ll also take a look at whether the iPod touch G3 is a good choice for those who want in on Apple’s iPod and App Store ecosystem, but don’t want an iPhone or smartphone contract. (Yes, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm, Android, and feature-phone users want an “App for That” too…)

The shell is the same as last year’s iPod touch. Indeed, the 8GB version IS last year’s model. Regardless, they all share the insanely thin form factor, enhanced by the deep curves of the mirror-like chrome backing. For those who’ve never held one, it’s noticeable slimmer, and not-quite-as-noticeably lighter than an iPhone 3GS. It’s also smaller, roughly the height and width of an iPhone if you removed its silver bezel. The sleep and home buttons are of course in place, as are the volume rockers and external speaker(-ish) that snuck in during the second generation.

The 32GB, and the 64GB model iPod touch G3 we’re looking at here get all new guts this year, the same glorious guts the iPhone 3GS got. Almost.

Turns out the iPod touch G3 has a slightly newer version of the same Samsung Cortex A8 processor — S5L8922X as opposed to the iPhone 3GS S5L8920X. Last year’s iPhone touch 2G was clocked faster than last year’s iPhone 3G, and it’s possible this year’s is clocked faster than the iPhone 3GS as well, but we haven’t seen any hard evidence of that yet. Likewise, iPod touch G3 seems to have the same PowerVR SGX graphics core as the iPhone 3GS, but since Apple never, not ever, speaks about specs, we’ll have to wait until all the tear down data is in.

We do know, however, that the iPod touch G3 has a newer Broadcom BCM4329 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip that could, potentially, be unlocked to run at 802.11n speeds. The iPhone 3GS doesn’t have that chip, or that potential. Whether Apple ever does unlock it, however, is anyone’s guess.

The biggest news following the release of the iPod touch G3 wasn’t the speed, however, or any of the software functionality. It wasn’t a feature at all. It was the lack of a widely rumored, universally anticipated feature — a camera and mic with video recording and sharing capabilities.

We saw cases with cutouts for cameras. We saw prototypes with cameras. We even saw tear downs with holes for where the cameras could — arguably should — have been.

But the iPod touch G3 is here and the camera isn’t. Apple doubtless stopped that signal.
We don’t know for a fact why. Steve Jobs said it was to keep costs down and the focus on the App Store. Rumor said the cameras Apple planned to use were defective or otherwise didn’t work out. Our guess is that an iPod nano G5-style VGA video-only camera was a deal-breaker for Apple when it came to their flagship iPod touch, and if Apple can’t do something great, they tend not to do it at all.
